Reopening of Shanghai Grand Cinema

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

This is an article about the reopening of a historical cinema in Shanghai, the Shanghai Daguangming Grand Cinema, as a masterpiece coming out from one-year-renovation. The cinema now meets the old and new design both in a place, to keep the big name remembered by many people and to accommodate modern audiences. The cinema also has some plus points, which I guess are used for selling historical value as marketing tool, such as they display the historical photos of the former building. The building and features are now luxurious. If you are visiting China, particularly Shanghai, maybe you can visit the cinema to document. Make sure you read article before. Read here.

Ethics in human cloning

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

The latest bio-technological development, cloning, has driven many ethical issues around the world. An article I found discusses it quite well. There are pros and cons when the cloning is done to animals, and much more when it comes to the idea of human cloning. The first try has been made in September 1993, where Jerry Hall and Dr. Robert Stillman multiplied 17 microscopic human embryos in to 48 to produce the first human clone. Cloning creates the duplication of human/animals that really perform the same capability, personality, complexion, etc. That is a problem to humanity. Even identical twins, that are creature of God, still have differences. There have been long cons to this. If you’re interested about the topic, read here.

The first “living building” opened in St. Louis

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

I’m sure not many of us have heard such a building before. Then check this report by Christine Dell’Amore at National Geographic News. It’s good for our inspiration.

The first “living building” was set in the woods at a campus’s environmental-research facility, launched in 2006, and was arguably the most extreme green building in the world. The builders said the building meets 16 requirements to earn that status. Among them are as followed.

1. The building must be run by solar energy.

2. The drinking water must take rainwater as resource, which is captured and stored until later get purified for drinking.

3. The building should use porous pavement, which will absorb storm-water runoff with no waste water.

4. Material used for the center building must come from within 500 miles, and only use fallen trees or trees slated for removal.

At that moment, another 60 project teams have signed up to pursue the same certification. That’s good to hear. I hope our earth has more and more such building, not only at research facility. Read here.

Confession of an economist

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

I was surfing Inman Blog when I found this article at the News section. David A. Lereah said in a Wall Street journal article about how he was pressured by executives to issue optimistic forecasts during his position as chief economists National Association of Realtors (NAR), just to later get blamed when things didn’t go well. He was known for talking about the downturn of housing market. Lereah left the association after seven years of doing everything they wanted him to do. He then participated in a secretive project at Realtor.com in mid 2007 until the project was later canceled. A spokesman from National Association of Realtors said that David A. Lereah used similar forecasts in his book with those that was not published by the giant trade group.

Read the complete articles at this link. It’s really interesting as many think economists make forecasts independently and they are really from their analysis. We can not blame people without knowing what is behind him.

A gay porn star kicked out from school

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Lisa Killian goes over this report according to what she heard at Fox News. I find that she gathered the whole information very well. It was John Gechter, a student at Grove City College (GCC), that was kicked out after being caught working as a gay porn star.

GCC has since suspended him for sexual misconduct, participating in a public display of pornography, and violating the values of the college. For John, it’s GCC who is violating his rights. He wasn’t ready for the strict punishment he has received because he was doing something legal. The treatment he has received from fellow students was even worse. John later decided to sue the school and the individual students that sent hate mail because it’s a kind of character defamation. Read the complete article of Lisa Killian.
